The environmental health service assists businesses in the borough comply with their duties under health and safety legislation. Along with the Health and Safety Executive we enforce standards to make sure risk to employees and the public are managed.

  • Health and Safety - Construction Regulations

    Building Regulations are legal requirements aimed at achieving adequate standards for the construction of domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. They are laid down by Parliament and are supported by separate documents containing practical and technical guidance on compliance, which are known as 'Approved Documents'. These are produced in different parts.

    All premises where cooling towers and evaporative condensers are situated must register with the local authority under The Notification of Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.

    By law certain businesses, such as offices and shops, need to be registered.

  • Regulation, Inspection and Enforcement

    The Council's Health and Safety officers operate within an agreed enforcement policy. They carry out regular checks on offices, shops, warehouses, places used for leisure activities and other non-industrial premises. (The Health and Safety Executive deal with factories and other industrial operations.) This ensures that safe and healthy working conditions are provided for all employees, the self-employed and members of the public visiting these premises.

    We offer a wide range of food hygiene and occupational health and safety training courses for managers and staff, which can be tailored to suit individual businesses.

  • Welwyn Hatfield Safety Advisory Team

    Welwyn Hatfield Safety Advisory Team (WHSAT) is a multi-disciplinary group that meets on an ad-hoc basis to advise on planning for major events that may take place within the borough.
