Bus Passes

Anyone over the age of 60 and qualifying disabled people under the age of 60 are entitled to a bus pass that allows them to travel on local bus services anywhere in England free of charge.

Who can apply for a bus pass?

Anyone who is a permanent resident of the borough and is over 60 years of age or is younger but has a qualifying disability can apply.

Definitions of  qualifying "disability" are listed on page 3 of the Department of Transport document "guidance to local authorities on eligibility for disabled people".

How do I apply?

You will need to complete an application form and provide a recent, colour passport-sized photo together with proof of your age (or disability if you are under 60)

and proof of your address

Where and when can I travel with a pass? 

You can use the pass to travel  on local bus services at "any time" within Hertfordshire and "off-peak" anywhere else in England. (off-peak is after 9.30am and before 11pm Monday - Friday. At weekends and bank holidays you can use the pass at any time). 

The pass does not entitle the holder to travel free on Express Coaches, trains or the London Underground. However, National Express and some train networks offer their own discounts to pass holders for certain train routes. First Capital Connect give a 50% discount on train travel within Hertfordshire after 10am.

Companion Passes

 If you are unable to travel alone you may apply for a "companion pass" which entitles someone to travel with you, also free of charge (within Herts only) .
