The third national Veterans Day will take place on Friday 27 June and veterans living in the borough are invited by Councillor Michael Long, Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield, to attend a special reception to mark the occasion.
The event, organised by Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, will be held at the Terrace Suite, Campus West in Welwyn Garden City between 1.00-3.30pm.
Veterans Day is a chance for the nation to recognise the contribution made by veterans of all ages who have served in past and present conflicts. There are celebratory events of different sizes planned across the country to commemorate the day.
Cllr Michael Long, a Merchant Navy and Army veteran himself, said: “This is a particularly significant time to remember veterans, as we currently have so many troops serving overseas. The enormous debt that society owes our armed forces who have faithfully served their country should not be forgotten.
“I look forward to meeting with former military personnel, and hearing about their experiences, which I’m sure will demonstrate their courage and professionalism in sometimes very difficult circumstances.”
Michael joined the merchant navy at the age of 16, and later went on to work as a radio operator in tanks and the CO's driver. He joined the army in 1956 and left in 1958.
A buffet and refreshments will be provided, and their will be a licensed bar on site. If you would like to attend the reception, please contact Caroline Jenkins, the council’s mayor’s secretary on 01707 357419 or email c.jenkins@welhat.gov.uk.
